For some applications, you might need to use a connection string to connect to your data source. For detailed information about how to use a connection string in an ODBC application, refer to the documentation for the application that you are using. The connection strings in the following sections are examples showing the minimum set of connection attributes that you must specify to successfully connect to the data source.

Depending on the configuration of the data source and the type of connection you are working with, you might need to specify additional connection attributes. For detailed information about all the attributes that you can use in the connection string. You can set additional configuration options by appending key-value pairs to the connection string. Configuration options that are passed in using a connection string take precedence over configuration options that are set in the DSN.

Some applications provide support for connecting to a data source using a driver without a DSN. To connect to a data source without using a DSN, use a connection string instead.

The following is the format of a DSN-less connection string for a basic connection to a Oracle server:. All Files. The application's source code does not have to be recompiled for each data source. A database driver links the application to a specific data source. A database driver is a dynamic-link library that an application can invoke on demand to gain access to a particular data source.

Therefore, the application can access any data source for which a database driver exists. A library of ODBC function calls that allows an application to connect to a data source, execute structured query language SQL statements, and retrieve results.

Figure shows the components of the ODBC model. Figure shows an ODBC application accessing three separate databases. Oracle ODBC driver now supports executing a stored procedure, which can return implicit results without using RefCursor.

This support eases any third party ODBC application, which migrated to Oracle and wants to use this same functionality that was provided by their previous vendors.

However, because the data that the users are entering into these spreadsheets are first being entered into another separate application database, these users have been doing double-entry — a redundant process which can be easily remedied by various means.

Ideally, the solution for this problem would be to extract the data from the application database and load it into the reporting database using an SSIS package. Unfortunately, that would require some redevelopment of the application which loads data into the reporting database, and we and the customers have no bandwidth for that.

So I came up with a quick workaround that made everyone happy — using a VBA macro to automatically populate the spreadsheets with data when the users open them.

I had the Instant Client software installed on the PCs, then I added the requisite database connection information to the tnsnames.

Nota bene: In the Instant Client or at least in our setup, using version It is only imperative that the proper entries exist in the tnsnames. You must log in to post a comment. Skip to content.
