This is the collection of objects that make up the player head camera, hands, etc. This is needed to add your real-world height to the controller. Welcome, everyone. In this lesson we are just gonna be setting up our Unity project here before we jump into scripting.

So first of all what we want to do is open up a brand new unity project. Here I am in mine right here. And to actually make sure that Unity knows that this project is indeed a virtual reality project, we want to basically tell them that. There we go and as you can see, this information here popped up, should be all good.

We can now exit out of this window. Something else we need as well is a Unity package and that is going to be the XR legacy input helpers. Now what this is, it is a component that basically can access the position, the rotation, and other information from either the headset, the controllers, basically any sort of XR device. These components can access that information and translate that to movement inside of Unity.

Now the thing about the XR legacy input helpers which is here at the bottom, is that this is not really supported by Unity anymore. And now we can begin to import the assets we need. Or you can go onto the Zenva VR Github repo link which will be down in the lesson summaries, and that will give you the entire Zenva VR library for you to use.

Unity provides two primary ways to access spatial input data for Windows Mixed Reality, the common Input. Each of these APIs are described in detail in the sections below. Windows Mixed Reality supports motion controllers in a variety of form factors, with each controller's design differing in its relationship between the user's hand position and the natural "forward" direction that apps should use for pointing when rendering the controller.

To better represent these controllers, there are two kinds of poses you can investigate for each interaction source, the grip pose and the pointer pose. Both the grip pose and pointer pose coordinates are expressed by all Unity APIs in global Unity world coordinates.

The grip pose represents the location of either the palm of a hand detected by a HoloLens, or the palm holding a motion controller. On immersive headsets, the grip pose is best used to render the user's hand or an object held in the user's handsuch as a sword or gun. The grip pose is also used when visualizing a motion controller, as the renderable model provided by Windows for a motion controller uses the grip pose as its origin and center of rotation.

The system-provided pointer pose is best used to raycast when you are rendering the controller model itself. If you are rendering some other virtual object in place of the controller, such as a virtual gun, you should point with a ray that is most natural for that virtual object, such as a ray that travels along the barrel of the app-defined gun model.

Because users can see the virtual object and not the physical controller, pointing with the virtual object will likely be more natural for those using your app.

Pointer as the argument. Like the headsets, the Windows Mixed Reality motion controller requires no setup of external tracking sensors. Instead, the controllers are tracked by sensors in the headset itself. If the user moves the controllers out of the headset's field of view, in most cases Windows will continue to infer controller positions and provide them to the app.

When the controller has lost visual tracking for long enough, the controller's positions will drop to approximate-accuracy positions. At this point, the system will body-lock the controller to the user, tracking the user's position as they move around, while still exposing the controller's true orientation using its internal orientation sensors.

Many apps that use controllers to point at and activate UI elements can operate normally while in approximate accuracy without the user noticing. The best way to get a feel for this is to try it yourself. Check out this video with examples of immersive content that works with motion controllers across various tracking states:. Apps that wish to treat positions differently based on tracking state may go further and inspect properties on the controller's state, such as SourceLossRisk and PositionAccuracy :.

Submit a concept document for review as early in your Quest application development cycle as possible. This data is only permitted to be used for enabling hand tracking within your app and is expressly forbidden for any other purpose. The hand tracking feature enables the use of hands as an input method for the Oculus Quest device.

It delivers a new sense of presence, enhances social engagement, and delivers more natural interactions with fully tracked hands and articulated fingers. Integrated hands can perform object interactions by using simple hand gestures such as pinch, unpinch, and pinch and hold.

The hand tracking feature lets you operate with hands and controllers interchangeably. You can use the cursor-pointer to highlight, select, click, or write your own app-level event logic.

Hand tracking complements the Touch controllers and is not intended to replace controllers in all scenarios, especially with games or creative tools that require a high degree of precision.

By opting-in to hand support, your app also needs to satisfy additional technical requirements specific to hand tracking in order to be accepted on Oculus Store. To submit an app to Oculus Store, the app must support controllers along with hand tracking. Apps render hands in the same manner as any other input device.

The following sections help you get started with rendering hands in your app:. This functionality is only supported in the Unity editor to help improve iteration time for Oculus Quest developers. OVRManager surfaces different options such as controllers only, controllers and hands, and hands only to enable hand tracking from Unity.

If the app supports controllers only, it does not add any elements in the manifest file. When the app supports controllers and hand, android:required is set to "false"which means that the app prefers to use hands if present, but the app continues to function with controllers in absence of hands.

How to set up Unity for VR Rigs and Hand Controllers

Users must enable the hand tracking feature on their Oculus Quest to use their hands in the virtual environment. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to set RightHandAnchor to right hand type. Once OVRHandPrefab is added to each hand anchor and configured with the appropriate handedness setting, you can start using hands as input devices. There are several advanced level settings that influence how hands render and interact with objects in app. OVR Skeleton exposes data such as the skeleton bind pose, bone hierarchy, and capsule collider data.

In the Skeleton Type list, select the hand for which you are retrieving the data. For example, hand left. The mesh is configured with attributes such as vertices, uvs, normals, and bone weights. In the Mesh Type list, select the hand for which you are retrieving the data.

The hand scale may change at any time and we recommend that you should scale the hand for rendering and interaction at runtime.Implemented in: UnityEngine.
